Frequently asked questions
Everything to know before planning your day.
How far is Gruyères from Geneva?
Gruyères is around 120 kilometres from Geneva by road. The route follows the A1 motorway to Lausanne, then the A9 and A12 towards Bulle. Without traffic, allow about an hour and a half. The actual journey time depends on traffic, especially around Geneva and Lausanne at rush hour.
Can you visit Gruyères on a day trip from Geneva?
Yes. The distance allows you to leave in the morning and be back in the evening. In one day, you can explore the medieval town and its castle, watch Gruyère AOP being made in Pringy and add one or two further stops, such as Maison Cailler in Broc or Moléson. We put the programme together around your wishes and the season.
How long does the excursion last?
It is a full day, departing from and returning to Geneva. The pace and the number of stops are adapted to your group. A family with young children does not have the same needs as a group of art lovers or hikers. We suggest an itinerary when we prepare your day.
What is the best season to visit the Gruyère region?
The region can be visited all year round, but spring, summer and early autumn offer the most options. The castle garden is open from Easter to September. The Moléson funicular and cable car run during the warmer months, on dates set each year. In winter, the castle, the cheese dairy and Maison Cailler remain open.
Do visits need to be booked in advance?
For Maison Cailler, booking online is recommended to avoid queuing. Some activities, such as the children's treasure hunt at Gruyères Castle, must be booked in advance. When you organise your day with us, we take care of checking availability and opening hours at each venue for your chosen date.
Can we bring children?
Yes, the Gruyère region is ideal for a family outing. Cheesemaking at La Maison du Gruyère, the tasting at Maison Cailler and the funicular ride up Moléson are great favourites with children. The castle offers a treasure hunt on booking. The HR Giger Museum, with its dark world, is less suitable for young children.
In which language is the excursion run?
Our website is available in French, German, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese. We organise the day in your group's language, subject to availability. On site, some venues offer their own materials: the castle's audio guide, for example, is available in French, German and English.
What is Gruyère AOP?
Gruyère is a hard cheese born in the Gruyères region. It has held a controlled designation of origin in Switzerland since 2001, today a protected designation of origin (AOP). It is made from raw milk, with no pasteurisation or additives, using milk delivered twice a day. At least 400 litres of milk are needed for a wheel of around 35 kilos.
Are Maison Cailler and Gruyères Castle close to each other?
Yes. Broc, home to Maison Cailler, and Pringy, home to La Maison du Gruyère, are neighbours of the town of Gruyères. The HR Giger Museum is a few metres from the castle, within the town itself. Moléson rises above Moléson-sur-Gruyères. These stops are easy to combine in a single day.
How do I organise my private day in the Gruyère region?
Fill in the “Plan your day” form, giving your preferred date, the number of participants, the language and the places that interest you. We will come back to you with a proposal tailored to your group. You can then fine-tune it with us before confirming.
