When to visit Gruyères: a season by season guide

Gruyères can be visited all year round: the castle, La Maison du Gruyère and Maison Cailler stay open in winter. Spring, summer and early autumn nonetheless offer the most options, as the castle garden is open from Easter to September and the Moléson funicular runs in the warmer months. The right choice depends above all on what you want to see.

In spring and summer, the fullest day

From Easter to the end of summer, all the stops are in principle open. The castle's French formal garden is open, and the Moléson funicular and cable car run, on dates set each year by the operator. This is the period when it is easiest to combine the medieval town, cheese, chocolate and a mountain panorama in the same day.

Summer is also the busiest season. The town of Gruyères draws many visitors, and booking Maison Cailler is then recommended to avoid queuing. At the summit of Moléson, at 2,002 metres, it is noticeably cooler than in the lowlands: a jacket is still useful even in fine weather. The long days leave plenty of time to wander without hurrying.

In autumn, colours and more calm

Early autumn remains a very good time. The Pre-Alps take on their colours, the light is soft and the town is often quieter than in the height of summer. The main visits stay open. The castle garden closes at the end of September, and Moléson runs until the end of season date set by the operator, to be checked for your chosen day.

The further into autumn, the more changeable the weather becomes. Fog can cover the lowlands while the heights sometimes stay in the sun, above a sea of clouds. For a day in October or November, we keep the order of the stops flexible to make the most of the best hours of the day. The days also get shorter: the programme then includes one stop fewer.

In winter, a day centred on the town and its flavours

In winter, the essentials stay open. Gruyères Castle welcomes visitors every day of the year, with opening hours that vary by season. La Maison du Gruyère and Maison Cailler are also open, the chocolate factory closing only on 25 December and 1 January. The HR Giger Museum, in the town, completes the programme for lovers of fantasy art, according to its seasonal opening hours.

The Moléson funicular and cable car are not part of the day in winter: they run in the warmer months. The resort of Moléson-sur-Gruyères then offers a ski area, snow permitting, which is not part of our offer. A winter day therefore focuses on the town, cheese and chocolate, with mostly indoor visits. On the cobblestones, good shoes are all the more useful.

How to choose your date

The best season depends on your priorities. If the Moléson panorama matters a lot, aim for the warmer months and keep a backup date in case of bad weather. If your group is coming mainly for cheese and chocolate, any season works. To avoid the crowds, weekdays and the months either side of summer are generally quieter.

In your request, give your preferred date and, if possible, another date. We check the opening hours and availability of each place on those dates, which change with the season, then suggest a suitable itinerary. On the day itself, the order of the stops can still change with the weather, so that you go up Moléson at the best moment when it is on the programme.

Frequently asked questions

When to visit Gruyères: a season by season guide

Is Gruyères worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you accept a day without Moléson. The castle, La Maison du Gruyère and Maison Cailler stay open, and the medieval town keeps all its character under snow or fog. It is a good season for a day centred on history and flavours.

When does the Moléson funicular run?

The Moléson funicular and cable car run in the warmer months, on dates set each year by the operator. These dates change from year to year: we check them for the day of your trip. Even in season, the view from the summit depends entirely on the weather.

What happens if it rains on the day of the trip?

Most of the stops are indoors: the castle, the cheese dairy, the chocolate factory and the museum. In bad weather, we adjust the order of the day and may drop Moléson if the view is blocked. The day keeps its appeal, even in the rain.
